With a handful of hurricanes and tropical storms ravaging the southern coast in the past weeks, I thought this would be a fitting topic.
In the last week have you experienced any adverse whether? If so, what?
Not really. We did have a lot of rain this week. On the way home from dinner on Thursday, we had a sudden downpour and we could not see out of the windshield. Traffic was immediately halted. It didn't last too long though.
What is the worst natural disaster you have ever experienced?
I'm not sure. What do I gauge it by? If we are talking overall damage to the whole community, I guess the Floods of '93 and '08. If we are talking about the most intense, I would have to say tornadoes, which we get here very often. In late spring and summer, we get multiple tornadoes in the area each day. It's just a part of life here. In fact, I'm kind of a tornado junkie. They are terribly exciting and intense. But, they can cause such horrific damage and fatalities. :( I suppose hurricanes are the most massive. I've been in a couple. But, in my experience, the floods have caused the most damage in my personal life.
Of all the natural disasters, which one scares you most? Excites you most?
Scares me most? Maybe earthquakes, since I've only experienced a very, very minor one...and I was far enough away that it was just a weird jolt. I couldn't imagine having the whole Earth shake. I'd say the most exciting is a tornado. They are destructive and dangerous, yes, but also very beautiful, in a terrifying way. The feeling in the air is so bizarre and electrifying, it's exhilarating.
If a typical natural disaster for your location were to arise immediately, would you be prepared?
If it was a flood or tornado, I would be prepared. We are prepared for those things in our area. But, if we suddenly had an earthquake (I guess there is a fault line under our area, but it isn't active), I wouldn't know what to do. In movies they go to the doorways, so I guess that might be what to do.
